The short answer

A Hydrafacial is a non-invasive, device-led facial that combines cleansing, exfoliation, pore extraction and hydration in one treatment. Its handpiece uses Hydrafacial's Vortex-Fusion system: controlled suction helps lift debris and impurities while solutions and serums are delivered through the treatment tip.

What actually happens to your skin?

The exact protocol can be personalised, but the core idea is progressive rather than aggressive. The skin is cleansed and exfoliated, a customised peel can be used, congestion can be extracted with suction, and the treatment finishes by infusing hydration and antioxidant-rich solutions.

Depending on the treatment level and your skin goals, a Hydrafacial can also include a targeted booster, red or blue LED light therapy and lymphatic drainage.

The four core Hydrafacial stages

The treatment combines several familiar facial steps in one device-led sequence.

1

Cleanse

Loosen surface buildup and prepare the skin.

2

Exfoliate

Use controlled exfoliation to refine the surface.

3

Extract

Use vortex suction to lift loosened debris.

4

Hydrate

Deliver hydrating serum and finish the treatment plan.

Is the extraction the same as squeezing blackheads?

Not really. Manual extraction uses pressure around an individual blockage. Hydrafacial uses the handpiece and suction as part of a broader exfoliation-and-extraction process. Some clients may still benefit from careful manual extraction where appropriate, but the machine is designed to make clearing pores a controlled part of the facial rather than the whole treatment.

What can it realistically help with?

Hydrafacial is commonly used when the goal is brighter, more hydrated-looking skin, smoother texture, reduced visible congestion or support for the appearance of fine lines. It is highly customisable, which is useful because dehydrated skin, clogged pores and uneven tone do not all need the same treatment.

It is still a cosmetic facial, not a diagnosis or cure for a skin disease. Persistent, severe or painful acne, unexplained rashes and changing lesions need appropriate medical assessment.

What are the Holmes of Beauty options?

At Holmes of Beauty, our current Hydrafacial menu is built in three levels. Holmes Express focuses on the core cleanse, extract and hydrate steps with a GlySal peel and finishing skincare. Holmes Deluxe adds more time, LED light therapy and additional hands-on finishing. Holmes Platinum starts with lymphatic drainage and includes a targeted booster selected around your skin concern.

That means the best choice is not automatically the longest treatment. It depends on whether you mainly want a thorough refresh, added LED and relaxation, or a more targeted booster-led plan.

What about downtime?

Many people choose Hydrafacial because they want visible freshness without the recovery associated with more aggressive resurfacing. Mild temporary redness can still happen, especially if your skin is reactive or extractions are needed. Your therapist should adapt the treatment rather than assume every skin can tolerate the same intensity.
